Big Cake

Creator & Producer, "BIG CAKE"
Washington D.C. Convention Center Grand Opening
March 2003

The Grand Opening of the new Washington Convention Center was held on Sunday, March 30, 2003, as nearly 10,000 members of the community packed the new facility to enjoy the block party of all block parties. From 2pm to 7pm, attendees were treated to over 25 spectacular entertainers, local marching bands, choirs, food, games and other activities.

The highlight of Sunday's Grand Opening festivities included the cutting of DC's largest cake model, "BIG CAKE", which was 18 feet long, 7 and 1/2 feet wide, and almost 4 feet high, an exact replica, to scale, of the new Washington Convention Center. Hollin Hall Pastry Shop created the masterpiece using 300 pounds of rolled French pastry fondant and a generous amount of colored Royale Icing for the magnificent decoration.

As only the front/top portion of the cake was utilized during the V.I.P. "cake cutting" and consumption, back-up White Chocolate Cherry Truffle and Dark Chocolate Cherry Jubilee cakes were prepared with 400 pounds of fresh butter, 350 dozen large eggs, 350 pounds of sugar, 180 pounds of flour, 120 pounds of imported sour cherries, 110 pounds of Belgian white chocolate, and 110 pounds of Belgian dark chocolate.
